Proofing Process and Fees

We are a small shop and generally handle small to medium runs.  We have no minimum for print orders and do not require large orders to receive a fair price. You will get our best price even if you only order one print. Because we are artist’s ourselves, we understand an artist's need to control costs so we recommend printing your edition(s) in small batches, re-ordering prints as needed.

Setup Fees

There is a no setup fee for digital images unless digital manipulation is required.  If digital manipulation is required for an image, then there is a onetime setup fee for that image of $20. This would include such services as cropping, color correction, enlarging, etc.

There is a one time $20 fee for creating an initial digital image, whether it is scanned or photographed.  However, this fee is waived for initial orders of 11 or more prints (8x10 or larger) from that digital image.

The Proofing Process:
There is no charge for first 8x10 proof.  If requested, additional proofs are $10 each.

We do not require you to have a proof ran, but we strongly suggest it. To encourage you in requesting a proof we have held our proofing price as low as possible. As part of the printing project, we will normally budget for producing proofs before the final order is run. This gives you, the customer, a chance to see what you will be getting and to ensure that you are happy with the quality and color matching. Once a proof has been approved its settings are permanently stored so you will not have to suffer a proofing charge on future orders. We do retain the proof copy on file so we have a visual reference for future orders.

waterfallAs an artist you should expect to see physical proofs before giving your final go ahead if you have requested them. If you are not near Boise or cannot travel to Boise, this will obviously take time as the proof images will be mailed to you. WE DO NOT PROVIDE digital proofs via email, except in the case of cropping. A digital image on your computer screen will not match ours!  Our monitors have been color matched to our printers, making any digital proof viewed outside of our facility worthless and cannot possibly give you any idea of the quality of our work.

It cannot be stressed enough that it does not matter how good the person or the printing equipment is if the original image is not of sufficiently high quality. You cannot make a silk purse out of a sow's ear and working with anything but very high resolution scans or digital photographs will result in sub standard end results. Just because an image looks fine on your computer monitor does not mean it will produce a truly high quality print.

Most of our customers, even repeat ones, like to see a sample before we run off the finished print.
Preparation of the image does involve work and printing the proofs costs time and money too, so a charge is an industry norm. As stated above, our policy is to provide you with a proof ONLY AT YOUR REQUEST. Therefore, prices listed on our published pages do not include the cost of a proof(s).

One last thing in this section and it is important. Do not be fooled by online printers who claim "fastest, cheapest, highest quality". With fine art prints you cannot have all three.

A properly produced giclee on canvas will take several days after the digital image files have been received or created, because after printing, the new print needs to cure for 48 hours before a sealant can be applied. It takes another 24 hours for the sealed canvas to cure and be ready for stretching. In short, anyone offering a 24 hour turnaround is not producing a reproduction of the "highest" quality.

Sealant Fees

We do charge a $2.00 per foot charge to varnish prints, with a $5.00 minimum for prints sized 8x10, 8x12,10x12, 12x12 or 11x14. To figure the square footage of your print simply multiply the width x length in inches, then divide by 144. If you need to convert a large length or width from feet to inches simply multiply the total number of feet x 12. An example is a 18”x5’ print: 5 x 12 = 60” x 18”= 1080 ÷ 144 = 7.5 square feet.

Which Media is Right For Your Prints?

When deciding on which media for your prints there will be several factors to consider including prices, sizes and your intended market.

Canvas
last warrior
We use nothing but the best quality, acid free, waterproof, archival quality canvas. We can seal yourcanvas prints with either varnish in matte, luster or gloss finishes. I personally am a big fan of the gloss finish.  Whether the canvas is sealed by Studio 3 or yourself, the canvas must be sealed if it is to be protected for longevity. At Studio 3, we roll the canvas with sealer so that it receives a complete and substantial covering.  This is particularly important if you are intending to hand finish (paint) any of your prints, as it’s essential that the print be sealed before the application of any more paint.

Gallery Wrap.

As mentioned on the “Fine Art Printing Process” page, Studio 3 does not recommend stretching canvas unless the display situation calls for it.  We do recommend certain vendors as framers of choice, who can provide excellent framing and stretching options for you.

If you are going to have a gallery wrap applied to the canvas as the mounting method, please be advised that there is an additional charge for the extra canvas required.  Studio 3 provides a 2” border on all canvas prints (except for 44” widths) but a gallery wrap can require an additional 1” or more.

Textured or Smooth Fine Art Paper

When it comes to paper we print giclees on acid free archival quality textured paper as we find it gives the most impressive results and a very high quality feel. Some work however will look better on smooth paper. If you are working in acrylic or oils and texture is an important aspect of your paintings then your reproduction may be better represented on textured paper. We will work with you to select the best reproduction paper for your particular need. There is a tremendous amount of information available today on new and existing fine art papers. Our goals is to help you choose the right one.

We can provide mounted, matted or simply final prints in their raw form depending on you, the customer's wishes.

Minimum Orders

While many printers require a minimum order, Studio 3 Creative does not.  We understand that often times you are selling, displaying or shipping prints by the each or one at a time, so multiple prints are not necessary or may be to expensive depending on the size.  However, in order to provide this service we must maintain a positive cash flow on all materials.  Prints and all attached fees must be paid for before the order is processed.  For your convenience we do provide credit card processing on Visa, MC, American Express and Discover.

As a small operation, we offer one off prints for all our customers whether you are an artist, retailer or member of the public. Being small and specialized we do have the ability to be flexible even down to producing a single print which we know will be of benefit to both of us.
